Ranelagh School Prospectus

ENGLISH English is at the heart of Ranelagh’s wider curriculum. Children read, write and communicate in every lesson. They experience a rich diet of quality children’s literature, and plentiful and varied opportunities to write about their many wonderful experiences. Speaking and listening is a core skill and this is practised in all subject areas. It is celebrated in Sharing Assemblies and End of Year Performances. The children have the opportunity to practise their speaking skills through drama activities, debates and group and partner discussion. We teach our pupils to develop a love of reading. We do this through: teaching an English curriculum which inspires, through the use of a range of excellent books reading with children weekly and setting personalised targets for the children so that they understand what they are doing well and how to take their next steps encouraging reading at home and communicating with parents about this through home reading records. In Early Years, and when needed at other points in their school careers, children learn to read and spell through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. This kick-starts their journey into reading and spelling, by giving them a secure knowledge of the sounds and letters in the English language and how they work together to form words. Children at Ranelagh learn that writing is communicating - they write for a wide variety of audiences and purposes. We teach them to write with clear, cursive handwriting and to accurately apply the grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively. Children leave Ranelagh with a solid foundation and knowledge of English that allows them to “be the best that they can be!” 06 07 THE FOREST SCHOOL One of Ranelagh’s core aims is for learning to be rich in meaningful and memorable experiences: every week, our pupils venture out to West Ham Park to take part in our Forest School Experience. The children saw wood, build shelters, create bug hotels and pond dip; they learn to understand, respect and enjoy the natural world, building confidence, learning new skills and improving their mental and physical health in the process. Pupils enjoy attending school . Teachers make learning interesting. Pupils listen with care and respect the views of each other. They can get on with their learning because everyone behaves well .
