Ranelagh is an amazing place for all children to learn. The Local Authority have recognised the amazing teaching and learning that happens daily at our school - they have seen the attainment and progress of all children over the last five years and have asked us to share our practice within Newham, encouraging us to become a Resource Provision for children with Autism (ASD).
Last week, our Year 6's took a well deserved break from the daily rigours of their lessons and SATs preparation to visit the Imperial War Museum. Inspired by their learning in the Ranelagh Curriculum this year, the children were buzzing at the opportunity to visit the museum and see, first hand, amazing relics from the first and second world wars.

Last Thursday Ranelagh's very own school football team, comprised of students in Years 4, 5 and 6, travelled to Winsor Primary to compete in two matches against Chobham Primary School and Winsor Primary School. For many on the team it was their first taste of a competive fixture, and also their first time playing on a grass pitch! The boys played brilliantly and fairplay was adhered to by all. The first match against Chobham finished in a thrilling 3-3 draw, with Bleu (Year 5) scoring a brace and Raymond (Year 6) levelling the game up in the dying seconds with an outside-the-box screamer!

| On Tuesday, five Year 5 students travelled to Park Primary School to take part in a Junior RE conference. They met other Newham children to discuss and celebrate what it is like growing up in a diverse community. All the children were amazing ambassadors for our school, developing a deeper understanding of how common values affect our lives. They shared how the similiarities and differences of people across the borough make the community of Newham to be such a special place to live, focusing on the values of hope and respect. |

On Friday 26th January, residents of Newham gathered at East Ham Town Hall to remember the victims of the Holocaust as part of the international Holocaust Memorial Day. Held annually, the event provides an important opportunity for us to remember those who suffered and died in the Holocaust.
The hard working librarians from Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 went to support our local library at Plaistow. They were shown how the library, now known as a Community Neighbourhood, works and the services it offers. They also got to use the computer system to join the library and issue books to themselves.
Children from Year 4 braved the elements on Wednesday to visit the Queen Elizabeth Park, intrigued in their learning about famous buildings and bridges. Through wind and rain they battled. They had a look at the world famous Aquatics Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid, the London Stadium, the Accelor Mittal Orbit and the many bridges of the park. Children looked at the different bridge designs in the park, and those they encountered on route.
There are always so many exciting events happening at Ranelagh, one of the most recent being a ‘Design your own T-Shirt’ competition aimed at celebrating a love of Literacy. Tasked with creating a T-Shirt design that demonstrated their adoration of reading, children from across the school were transformed into budding fashionistas, creating their very own decorated garments highlighting their favourite books.
Last Friday, Ranelagh held its annual Spelling Competition Final. After many rounds, spelling dozens and dozens of supremely difficult words, Ms Tsui and Ms Scott found the final four - Diamond, Gabriel, Manar and Sarisha.
The four of them competed against each other with words such as hyperventilate, exasperated and philosophical. The audience were able to join in, sitting in anticipation of whether they chose the correct spelling rule.
Tate and Lyle has a long history of supporting its local communities, dating back to the 19th Century and the philanthropy of the co-founders Henry Tate and Abram Lyle.
Today, this is translated into donating space at the refinery site for the Junior Citizens Programme run by the Metropolitan Police and organised by our very own Mrs Lawrenson. Other agencies involved include the Fire Brigade, St John’s Ambulance and the Environment Agency. Children are taken through potentially life-saving scenarios such as ‘stranger danger,’ contacting the emergency services, fire awareness and safety.
Last month, the whole of Ranelagh’s Year 5 visited the Tate and Lyle factory at the Thames Refinery. The children learned an incredible amount of information about keeping themselves safe and as Mrs Barzoi, Ranelagh’s Year 5 Lead, stated, “This is an important event for Year 5 children, it makes them develop the skills that will allow them to make the right choices in risky situations.”
Back in the Autumn term pupils at Ranelagh were rigorously travelling to and fro on Newham streets, all in the name of the annual Beat the Street competition. Beat the Street, delivered on behalf of Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Borough of Newham, is a competition aimed at inspiring millions of people to eat better, get active and be healthy by walking, cycling or running.

Children at Ranelagh were all given their very own exclusive Beat the Street ID cards which were then tapped a plethora of times on Beat the Street boxes, fastened to street lamps, trees, fences or anywhere of interest across the borough. This year the competition stiffened, with schools competing against each other across the whole of East London rather than within the borough. Ranelagh is very proud to have placed 7th overall, with an amazing 64,395 points (a near 50,000 increase from last year). Ranelagh was also the only Newham school who placed in the top 10! Well done Ranelagh! |
