Local Advisory Board
Ranelagh Primary School is a finding member of the Tapscott Learning Trust. We have an active Local Advisory Board (LAB), that acts as “a critical friend” to the school, providing strategic governance to ensure that all children receive the best possible education. The LAB meets as a whole group each term and delegates its business to a range of committees, where appropriate.
What do we do?
The LAB has an important part to play in raising school standards through its three key roles:
- Setting strategic direction
- Ensuring accountability
- Monitoring and evaluating school performance

The LAB is drawn from the staff of the school, parents and the wider community that our school serves. The usual term of office is four years but many members of the LAB stand for re-election and serve more than one term. The LAB provides expertise and experience across a range of skills so as to ensure that the school is able to undertake its duty to support the creation of a strong learning environment. The LAB continues to support and challenge the Leadership Management Team and staff to build upon the improvements that we have made as a school. The LAB will be monitoring student progress with a high expectation that all students can achieve the best that they are able to. We will also be ensuring that the pupil premium, which is extra funding to support disadvantaged young people, continues to make an impact in improved educational outcomes for our children. |

The LAB also focusses on the wider social aspects of the school, including through the use of the lodge, and to develop strengthening participation in school sports, music and the arts. Parents can play an important role in supporting the LAB and staff by making sure that homework is completed and, wherever possible, your sons and daughters are provided with a place at home where this important aspect of their learning can be achieved.

who are we:
Paul Harris
TTLT Chief Executive Officer - He is currently the
Executive Head Teacher of four schools, of which he led to outstanding with Ofsted, as well as one nursery and children’s centre, all within the London Borough of Newham. Paul is passionate about ensuring that all children are given the very best life chances and has a proven track record of tackling key contextual issues to lead schools rapidly and sustainably to being outstanding in all categories. Named Head Teacher of the Year in 2015, Paul is also a National Leader in Education (NLE) and school improvement advisor working with schools in challenging circumstances. Paul is a regular speaker at educational events, particularly after his involvement as a member of the DfE’s Rochford Review.
Shella Lawrenson
Shella is the Executive Head Teacher for North Beckton and
Ranelagh Primary Schools. She has worked in Newham schools since 1994 and has ensured that the children have been provided with the best opportunities possible. Shella is passionate about education being the steppingstone for future successes in life.
Rena Begum
As a co-opted governor at Ranelagh Primary School, I am proud to support the school’s strategic direction and its commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. I particularly value Ranelagh’s inclusive approach and its Roots to Ranelagh philosophy, which nurtures both academic and emotional growth and helps develop well-rounded, responsible young citizens.I have a strong personal connection to the school and the local community. I live locally, have a son currently in Year 5, and my older son also attended Ranelagh, leaving two years ago. This gives me a valuable perspective as both a governor and a parent who has seen the school’s work and impact over a number of years. As an Assistant Headteacher responsible for Teaching and Learning at a secondary school, I am deeply invested in education and bring experience in school leadership, teaching and learning, and evidence-informed practice. This enables me to contribute practical feedback and a strategic perspective while working collaboratively with staff and fellow governors. Being a governor is incredibly rewarding, and I value the opportunity to contribute to a school that is such an important part of my local community. I am committed to supporting Ranelagh to continue developing and providing the best possible education and opportunities for every child.
Robert Sewell
My name is Rob Sewell, and I am a Police Inspector with the Metropolitan Police Service. I have been a governor at Ranelagh Primary School for a number of years and lead on safeguarding, working closely with our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Patel, to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children.
I am a local resident and have dedicated my career to supporting and serving young people and the wider community. Before joining the police, I worked as a youth worker in Newham, where I successfully ran a youth centre supporting disadvantaged children and young people. In recognition of my work with young people, I was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) by Her Majesty The Queen in 2015 as part of her birthday honours.
As a parent myself, I understand the importance of providing children with a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment in which they can thrive. I am proud to be a father to three children, a son and twins (a girl and a boy). My wife is also dedicated to education and works as a teacher at another primary school in Newham. I am passionate about helping every child reach their full potential and feel privileged to support Ranelagh Primary School in its continued success. Proud school governor.
Mihaela Barzoi
I feel very fortunate to be a Teacher Governor and to be part of our school community. I really enjoy being involved in the school life and value the opportunity to work alongside staff, pupils and families to help make our school the best that it can be. It is a privilege to contribute to such a caring and supporting community and I look forward to helping our school continue to grow and thrive.
Edward Hoyle
Edward is an investment professional with a commitment to local education and community. He is the father of one current and one former pupil at Ranelagh. He joined the Ranelagh LAB in 2021 as a parent governor and was recently elected chair. Edward is also a long-serving member of Newham SACRE, which oversees the provision of religious education in Newman's schools, and is a volunteer coach of age grade rugby.
Rosie is an arts professional who works locally in Plaistow and has a commitment to supporting the community. She is the mother of two current pupils and one former pupil at Ranelagh. She joined the Ranelagh LAB in 2019 as a parent governor and became a trustee of the Tapscott Learning Trust in 2025, where she sits on the Finance, Operations and Resources committee. Rosie also volunteers as a trustee and treasurer of nearby Scout group 11th Newham West and runs Love E15, a community group that tackles fly-tipping around Ranelagh and local streets.
Amadou Jammeh (AJ) is an Accounting, Management and Finance specialist with extensive experience in education, leadership and governance. He served two terms as a Governor at Cumberland Community School, Newham, and joined the Ranelagh Local Advisory Board as a Parent Governor before being appointed as a Co-opted Governor. Having had three children attend Ranelagh from nursery before progressing to secondary education, he has a strong connection to the school community. Amadou is the Deputy Chair of the Ranelagh LAB and also serves on the Audit and Risk Committee of the Tapscott Learning Trust, using his financial expertise to support effective governance, accountability and strategic oversight.
